Asbestos Abatement

Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral composed of soft fibers that are heat resistant. It was used widely in things like insulation, plaster and drywall compound, and though it was banned in the late 1980s in some provinces, it was still being used in others up until the mid 1990s. As a result of this, it still exists in many older homes and buildings. The real danger of asbestos is when it is disturbed, since if asbestos dust is inhaled or ingested, mineral fibers can become permanently trapped in the body, leading to serious health issues.

The dangerous nature of asbestos means it is best handled by professionals. If you find asbestos during a renovation, or suspect it might be present contact DKI Miller Restoration to get the situation assessed, and the removal process started.

Asbestos Abatement

Mould and asbestos can be hazardous to your health is treated incorrectly and their removal and abatement should only be performed by trained individuals. DKI Miller Restoration experts are fully trained to handle these projects, quickly efficiently and safely.

Asbestos Testing Before You Renovate

Homes and buildings from before the 1990s can contain asbestos in drywall joint compound, plaster, textured ceilings, flooring and vermiculite insulation. Disturbing it during flood clean-up or renovation releases fibres that are a far bigger health risk than mould.

We inspect and sample suspect materials, send them to an accredited lab, and plan abatement under containment before demolition starts, in St. Catharines and across the Niagara Region.

Mould (Mold) & Asbestos – What Niagara Homeowners Ask

Is it mould or mold, and is it dangerous?

They are the same thing: “mould” is the Canadian spelling and “mold” the American one. Mold exposure can trigger allergies, asthma and respiratory irritation, especially for children, seniors and anyone with a weakened immune system, so large or recurring growth should be removed professionally.

How much mould can I clean myself?

Health Canada’s general advice is that small patches, under about one square metre on a hard surface, can usually be cleaned with water and dish soap while wearing gloves, eye protection and an N95 mask. Larger areas, mould that keeps coming back, or mould on materials soaked by floodwater should be handled by professionals.

Do you offer asbestos testing in St. Catharines?

Yes. We inspect and sample suspect materials in homes and commercial buildings across St. Catharines and Niagara, and lab results usually come back within a few days. If asbestos is found, we plan the abatement under containment before any demolition.

Why is mould showing up after the summer floods?

Floodwater soaks into drywall, insulation and flooring. If those materials were dried in place instead of removed, mould can keep growing out of sight and often shows up in the fall, when the house is closed up. Read our guide to hidden mould after the 2026 floods.

How long does mould remediation take?

Small jobs can often be finished in a day or two; larger jobs that need drying and rebuilding take longer. We give you a written scope and timeline before work starts, and set up containment and HEPA air scrubbing so the rest of the home stays usable.
